LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Disagrees, but supports religious opinions

Jan 13, 2012

Of Mr. Doolittle and the people who agree with him, however, I would ask a couple of things.

One, listen and discuss rather than label. I have never met nor talked with Mr. Doolittle, yet he feels free to label me and other people who don’t agree with him as members of “the godless (sic) liberal Left.” Our different opinions do not necessarily make us any of those things. Mr. Doolittle might consider taking part in the West Michigan Civil Conversation Project that will meet for the first time on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Loutit District Library.

Second, please keep in mind that you cannot force people to believe anything. As Leslie Weatherhead, a Christian theologian, said: “Thought must be free to range as it likes over all phenomena and philosophy, unhampered by compulsions. A man cannot be bludgeoned by vulgar threats of damnation into accepting that what other people say is true.”
