If you missed it, the Jan. 13 front page story of the Tribune headlined: “Ottawa County tops nation in pct. of job growth.” That’s right, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 322 largest counties in the United States, Ottawa County had the largest percentage increase in unemployment from June 2010 to July 2011 at 4.7 percent!
There is a long way to go to get our economy, both locally and nationally, back on track.
As Joy Gaasch, president of the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg stated, “Employers are once again looking for people to fill vacancies — production is up, there’s more demand in the marketplace. (Employers) are also finding some challenges in finding skilled workers.”
This in indeed is a most positive sign of better times ahead. Let’s keep it going, West Michigan!
