OUR VIEWS: Voter turnout unacceptable

Aug 16, 2012

The startlingly low 17 percent voter turnout for the recent primary election is disappointing, and local voters should be ashamed.

At a time when so many issues at the local and national levels are critical to our future, it’s time that people get informed and exercise their right to vote.

So many people think their one vote doesn’t matter, and therefore don’t make the effort to get to the polls and have their voting voice heard. Many times these are the same individuals that do nothing but complain about the decisions our elected officials make.

We live in the greatest country in the world. Could you imagine standing in long lines, sometimes in extreme temperatures with bullets flying over your head, just to get the opportunity to vote? That’s a real way of life for some in other parts of the world. There are people who risk their lives to cast their vote, and we can only get 17 percent of the voters to show up at the polls.

That doesn’t even take into effect those who haven’t put forth the effort to register to vote.

We will have a chance to redeem ourselves later this fall, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The general election in November is of great significance in our country’s history. It’s time to get out and vote and have your voice heard.

If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain. And, don’t worry, there won’t be bullets flying over your head.

unless the vote is to wipe the slate clean, then it doesn't matter. I voted, but the sad reality is that we are forced to pick between the lesser of two evils, so either way we lose...who wants to go out of their way and spend time and money to do that?(17 percent) Voting now is like plucking a chicken feather, but what you really need to do is grab it by the neck and twist! I guess 83% of people have little faith in our government...are you surprised (and this is local)!!?

I would rather not have the ignorant 83% vote at all. They are obviously too stupid to know the issues, or care how it affects them.

I agree...Vote, or Shut Up about how it affects you! Free speech isn't free.

Maybe 83% are tired of the lies.
