LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Grand Haven becoming Mutt City U.S.A.

Aug 17, 2012

As a frequent visitor to the downtown area, I thought the whole city was a dog park. Whether it be Washington Street or the boardwalk, one is always running into dogs and owners with little respect for people or our city. They may pick up poop most of the time, but do nothing to stop them from peeing on boardwalk monuments and streetscape items on Washington. I sure wouldn't sit on the grass near the boardwalk because some dog has probably peed there.

It’s too bad someone vandalized a plywood piece of "art.” If that's what it is called. Personally I believe these pieces have made a mockery of downtown and I will not frequent any establishment with one.

While on the subject of parks, I would like to see a "human park" where no animals are allowed and one could take a peaceful stroll. Finally, when they take down the Dewey Hill sign, Coast Guard City U.S.A., they could replace it with Mutt City U.S.A. I'm sure there would be many contributors.

The Tribune really went down the toilet with this steaming article of poo. lol!

PeopleAreAmazing

I'm thankful that we have such major issues in our town. I think it's interesting that these types of letter bring out the responses, but actual meaningful articles about issues that actually do matter get nothing. Clearly, Kirke likes to complain. Sure, there are dog owners who aren't responsible. There are drivers who aren't responsible. There are kids who aren't responsible. There are adults who aren't responsible. You can look at any facet of life, and you'll find people who aren't responsible. As much as we don't like it, it is part of living in a community. I know this, Kirke "Bad Dog" Harris isn't working on finding a solution to a real problem - he simply likes to complain. And that, my dear friends, is a load of......

Kirke Harris bashing!

The More I learn of mankind, the more I like my DOG!!!

edo372

Also Mr. Harris a case could be made that without domestication of the dog our species may not have survived how about a little gratitude!

My dog just ate a whole blue Frisbee that they handed out at the parade I could run him by his poo is stand out... a true statement piece for anyone's yard.

A simple solution for Mr Harris - don't cross the bridge.

Is it OK for a person to run up to your flag pole in your front yard a take a pee? Is it OK for a person leaving the art walk to stop and pee on a street sign? Is it OK for a person to stop in your front yard and pee? It it OK for a person to scent {Pee} on every object with in a 10 foot range of where i am walking in downtown? Maybe the dog owners can pay for a large sanitation truck to come and spray down the street of grand haven to ride it of the smell of dog pee!! Keep your filthy dog at home.

xoxo

Because humans are not animals. Dogs are animals. Don't like it, stay in your safe little house AWAY from the rest of us. What are you going to do about the birds and the squirrels and all the other outdoor animals? Where are they supposed to use the bathroom? Are you gonna just create a neat little litter box just for them and kick them out of town when they dont use it? Its just the same as the dogs using it. Now grow up and get a life. There's more important issues than complaining about where dogs do their buisness.

sirhansalot

XOXO it is better for all of us that you keep your dog at home. Why is it that the rest of the public has to put up with your dogs waste? ? Why should i have to worry about an unattended dog tied to a pole in front of a store might bite me while owner is inside shopping? Are you OK with dogs playing with the children at the new water park here in town? The sign says no dogs!!!! Why because they are dirty animals!!! it is a HEALTH ISSUE… KEEP Your DOGS AT HOME

PeopleAreAmazing

Dear Sir - Capital letters mean yelling. Yelling at dogs makes them crap. Don't yell at dogs.

sirhansalot

thats funny

xoxo

I am totally fine with them playing in the new park, because it is a DOG park. If I didnt want to be around dogs I wouldn't go to a DOG park. Hey, as long as I have to deal with your absolute stupidity, yes, you have to deal with my dog. :) Just because you have some weird hatred for them doesn't mean everyone else does. You don't like them and you see them on the side of the street, find, walk around them and don't aknowledge them. But find something better to do than complain about it to noone who cares, because as long as 99% of Grand Haven enjoys our pets (which are part of our FAMILIES), we are going to keep them around, so you can just scoot yourself on out of town because, to be honest, I'm thinking most of Grand Haven would choose the dogs over your vile personality, waste and all. :)

sirhansalot

I said that new WATER park ,,,,,,,,Not dog park. time for you to take more of your meds.

sirhansalot

birds and the squirrels and all the other outdoor animals are wild animals and we as a society cannot control these things, we can control our pets and we should, if you think it is health for your dog to leave its waste behind then start letting them go to the bathroom in your house! OH Wait THE WORLD AROUND YOU IS YOUR PETS DUMPING GROUND NOT YOUR HOUSE OR YOUR OWN YARD,BUT SOMEONE ELSE. KEEP THE DIRTY ANIMALS AT HOME

edo372

I think it is healthier for the dog to leave the waste behind... Otherwise, they would explode!

Do you poop Sirhansalot or are you exploding?

PeopleAreAmazing

Some folks on here have sure wasted a bunch of time on a worthless topic to argue about - like it or not - dogs are part of families. Families are part of our town. Dogs are part of our town - pee and all. Deal. Wurd.

sirhansalot

A Dog is a dog... if you choose to have one good for you just keep it at home.

Hannah

I think I am going to walk my dog(s) down to the free street party in Spring Lake this Saturday. They are pretty good size dogs and when they pee they pee alot, I think I will give them extra water before we leave. LOL!!

sirhansalot

Hannah, LOL the jokes on you,you are a very irresponsible dog owner

xoxo

Hannah, so agree, gonna do the same! And make sure HE is down there! Ha! sirhansalot, and you are just a cranky old man. Get over yourself. When 99% of the people are against you, you might just want to stop before you make yourself look even stupider. I'm sure Hannah is a very responsible dog owner, it is called A JOKE.

sirhansalot

99% of what? dog lovers, ????? your are not very well schooled and seem to think its ok to let your dog pee wherever it wants, and in fact you back up all 99% of non dog loves point, you are a irresponsible dog owner, i sure from the sounds of you he must keep you warm at night. Remember people eat dogs

xoxo

Wooow. I would not have guessed you were 23 years old. Sound more like an 8 year old who has not quite passed their english classes yet, with the PERSONALITY of a cranky old man. I am actually a very responsible dog owner. I've never brought either of my dogs around town, only once I brought them to a dog friendly park, where I had them on a leash and made sure they did not make any messes and kept them away from others. Yes, there are some irresponsible dog owners out there, but not all of them are. Honestly, what if your problem? You have the most horible, nasty personality I have ever had the displeasure to come across. If you really are 23 years old, then you REALLY need to grow up, get a job, and get on with your sad, lonley life. Because by the sounds of it you are a sad, sad lonley man with no one to love or talk to. I feel so very sorry for you.

sirhansalot

you are a lonely woman with out a real man.

xoxo

I'm a hapilly married woman, actually, married to a wonderful man who doesn't spend his time online complaining about dog poop. :)

edo372

Wow you sound so grown up too

sirhansalot

by the way i am 23 fool

Hannah

I can finally admit it, I am pretty irresponsible when it comes to the care of my dogs - I just can't help it - I have gone to counseling, I memorized and practice for at least 2 hours each day the '12 steps of of being a responsible dog owner', I watch Cesar Milan religously, I read responsible dog owner books over and over, and I just can't seem to get the concepts or understand what it means to be a responsible dog owner?
Maybe you can help me? Maybe that is why our paths have crossed - I do believe in fate - You sound very knowledgeable and educated on what it takes to be a responsible dog owner. Perhaps you can enlighten the readers and myself and at the same time help train the community on your protocoal of what it takes and what it means to be a responsible dog owner? Think of it as pro-bono. You have an audience, we are eager to learn from you - Please enlighten us...

:)

43°North

Here Boy! Here's your pro-Bono! Fetch! lol

True not every dog owner has common sense, or respect for others. Shows here. True of non-dog owners too. Definitely true of some parents and most bosses.

All the dog-lover's personal attacks against those who don't let dirty dogs lick their mouth aside here, Kirke does have a few valid points. I doubt it is a 99% one-sided conflict as hugs & kisses (reaaaally????) would have you believe.

sirhansalot

HANNAH this is the best advice you will ever get. Rule 1. If you do not have a yard large enough for your dog to run and use as a place to go the the bathroom ....then you should not have a dog.
Now lets talk about a person willing and wanting there dog to destroy public property to prove what Point???? You are nothing more then a person who is encouraging there pet to commit an act of destruction of public property. You have no class

Hannah

sirhansalot,

I was being facetious (if you don't know what that means, be sure to look it up) :)

****hook, line and sinker***** LMAO :)

I live in the city of GH in a 1600 square foot home situated on a double lot that is surrounded by a 6 foot privacy fence, in the middle of a beautifully landscaped yard lies our beautiful in ground swimming pool. Our dogs have more than enough room to romp, play and swim too (if they like). In fact we have so much room, we are probably going to rescue another dog very soon. However, when our dogs are home lounging about their beautiful home, they are too tired to romp in their yard, because they have romped all over the city or in the parks, and they are too tired to swim because they swam all they wanted to at the beach :)
