Is it really art?

Oct 13, 2012

So says Julie Budde Heiner in her thoroughly interesting "Michigan Cottage Cook Blog."

"I have been privileged to be able to go to exhibits by artists like VanGogh, Picasso and others, but I love Art Prize in Grand Rapids," she wrote in her recent "What is art?" blog. "There have been criticisms from the art community about some of the exhibits at the events. There is also criticisms that the people vote for who will be given the prize money and not art critics."

ArtPrize, by the way, ended this past weekend. I don't think anyone can say the big winners — like this year's "Elephants" pencil drawing — are not art. But some of the many other entries?

"To me, ArtPrize gives people the best attributes of what art is," Heiner wrote. "Of course, this is coming from a person trained in science (and) not art. ArtPrize is fun, interactive, memory provoking, engaging, thought generating, awe inspiring, conversation starting and joyful."

Heiner explored the 2012 ArtPrize and posted her thoughts and photos. Check it all out by clicking here.
