WELCH: Laughter is music for the soul

Nov 9, 2012

With this in mind, the staff at the Tribune thumbed through our comics pages and noticed that some of the cartoons weren’t, well, funny. Not even a half-smile could be coerced with some of them. In fact, a few were so outdated that we were well into reruns.

I decided it was high time to do something about this lack of consistently comical comics. After two surveys — a poll online at grandhaventribune.com and a separate, lengthier reader survey — the verdict was in.

Not a whole lot of you seem particularly attached to most of the comics the Tribune has been peddling for years. Out of all of our daily and Sunday comics, just seven proved to be standouts in the “like” category — Arctic Circle, Blondie, Close to Home, Crankshaft, Hi & Lois, The Lockhorns and Pickles. We agreed with you that these were the best of the best.

By sloughing off the unpopular and not-so-funny funnies, we’re now able to bring you your favorite top-shelf comics daily and on our Sunday comics pages.

But the fun won’t stop there. We’re adding five comics that had us guffawing out loud in our Third Street office.

The newbies include our absolute favorite: Rhymes with Orange, which reminds us of Gary Larson’s popular Far Side humor. Baby Blues, Zits, Sherman’s Lagoon and Buckles will round out the lineup.

Baby Blues really appeals to parents and grandparents, while Zits is of interest to teens and adults. Sherman’s Lagoon is a funny strip set to the sea and Buckles will delight the dog lovers in us all.

You’ll find these 12 comics in every issue of the Tribune, and you’ll also find a Kids News educational and fun page on the back of the Sunday comic section that appears in Saturday’s Tribune. We hope children throughout the Tri-Cities will enjoy the new page that’s just for them.

The great comic swap-out begins Monday. Check them out and give our comics pages a second chance to make you laugh.
