In a recent blog post on the Mothers of Preschoolers website, Alexandra Kuykendall chatted with Appling about how to bring out the creative side of your child. Appling is an art teacher and his most recent book, "Life After Art," addresses this issue.
"He speaks to us as one who spends time in the art room with kids of all ages and offers the teacher insight in how to foster the creative spark in our kids and ourselves," Kuykendall wrote. "Get ready to be inspired!"
So, how can moms encourage the artist in their child?
"I think part of it starts with parents carving out space for creative expression in their own lives," Appling responded. "Children love to imitate! They want to participate in what Mom and Dad are doing.
"My family wasn't a very athletic family early on, and I think that shaped my involvement in sports, or lack thereof, later in life," he continued. "But learning, reading and creating had a high priority placed on them, so I came to really value those pursuits early on."
