Shooting ban in state game area is smart

It is true — one apple can spoil the whole bunch.
Jun 24, 2013

The recent decision to place a ban on all shooting at the state game area in Olive Township has neighboring residents elated that they will no longer have to duck for cover in the comfort of their own homes.

Anyone who opposes that decision obviously lives elsewhere, and the idea of bullets becoming lodged in your living room wall — or worse yet, a loved one’s body — is not a concern.  Those fears, however, are real for those who live near the state game area.

Safety should be the top concern when operating a firearm, and unfortunately someone violated that rule, and now anyone who has used that area for target shooting pays the price. Sorry, that’s the way it goes.

The decision to ban the use of firearms except during hunting season at least allows officers to regulate the area for a majority of the year, and that’s a step in the right direction to ensure safety for neighbors.

Operating a firearm is a dangerous, unforgiving activity — and those who partake in it must exercise extreme caution and safety.

Perhaps stiffer penalties for those involved in these kinds of accidents should be considered. Hunter’s safety courses would be a good start, too.

And, of course, common sense is irreplaceable.

We continue to urge the wildlife and other law enforcement officers to take violations of the ban seriously and relentlessly enforce it. You owe it to the residents of that area.

truthhurts

yet another anti-American liberal BS article. Maybe biking should be banned because of the few that break the rules of the road. Maybe food banks should be banned b/c of the few that abuse it. Maybe non-Americans should not be allowed to stay in this country. Maybe Obama should be fired for the actions of the IRS. Maybe foreclosure no longer exists rather repayment in hard labor. Maybe homeless people should not be helped. We do not live in a country where the actions of a few affect the majority. It is really quite sad the direction America is going and it is because of idiots that think like this.

rukidding

Well said "truth"; I don't know that all of the issues you named are "because of idiots that think like this", but they sure are a contributing factor.

bigdeal

yes, I too am afraid of a bicyclist shooting through my wall above my head just missing me. And I worry about food from the food bank, Obuma, and all the homeless blasting through my walls.
Talk about conservative idiots...

truthhurts

you missed the point you tard. did you read the article or did you over look that point to before you voted

bigdeal

Yes, I did in fact read the article, check out the 1st paragraph, it is about the safety of people INSIDE their homes by the game area.

Name calling really does get your point across well.

truthhurts

yet you refer to Obama as Obuma.

Lanivan

I can't speak for bigdeal, but I took it as beautifully written cynical sarcasm....

Soupy

Really? A tard? Would you call him that to his face? I think not. Hiding behind an internet handle where no one really knows who you are makes it pretty easy to engage in name calling. I think you could have asked the question without the insult.

bigdeal

I guarantee you Soupy, at 6'6" 300 lbs, they would not say it to my face. I am the big deal.

Wingmaster

The bigger they are, the harder they fall! Besides you big boys are way to slow!

bigdeal

If you say so Wingmaster, it must be true. I'm sure you have a link for that somewhere in your pocket.
FYI: 3rd fastest human in the 100 yard @ Ferris, only white boy in top 3 (way back in the day). And I could still run circles around most, even you probably.
Just saying Truthhurts wouldn't say it to my face, ever, and remain in their shoes. It is fun to joust erroneously in a forum, but referring to someone as a 'tard', which is short for retard, is crossing a line which I have no tolerance for.

Wingmaster

Yea he crossed the line there.

Probably could find a link there but I did figure that out on my own back in the day.

Lots of testosterone on here today. ...watch Lanny come in here and mess it all up!

Lanivan

bigdeal - nimbly said....you hit the target today.

Wingmaster

Hey, hey no but'n in us guys are talkin, go get us a beer;-)

Lanivan

How's 'bout a nice big ice cold glass of bleach?

Wingmaster

I just knew you would go an mess up the party.

Lanivan

Cheer up - it could have been so much worse.....

Wingmaster

What's up with the picture for this story? Toy soldiers? Really....how does that have anything to do with banning shooting in a state game area unless we have had an army invade this area?

Come on Trib, who signs off on that kind of stuff down there? Wow. Its bad enough your beating the story into the ground.

Lanivan

Frankly, I find it brilliant....good work, Trib!

Debate with Lan: exaggeration, overstatement, magnification, embroidery, embellishment, excess, overkill, rhetoric; informal purple prose, puffery.

Lanivan

Which side are you portraying in said debate? It's not immediately clear....

jjabrahms

quick, hurry up, STOP rock-n-roll..... it will make our children bad....
where will this end...?

rukidding

In my humble opinion, each and every article having to do with guns, and or gun control, registration, etc. is just so much falderal. Nothing stated in the article or the accompanying post will do anything but raise arguments between the opposing views and the persons that hold them. When the dust settles, and it will not settle in my life time, probably not most of yours either, there will be no significant changes and these debates will be nothing more than a waste of thought and time.

Something to do though; right Wing and Lani?

Lanivan

It is true that the topic of guns and gun control in the GHTrib forum expotentially increases the number of comments, hands down. One could say it is magical in it's ability to bring out heightened awareness of the Constitution, Founding Fathers, emotions, contradictions, and smoke and mirrors.

I write not because I lack ways to fill my time, but because I find myself interested in the major issues of my time, and having the extravagance of being able to expand my scope of reflection outside of daily life.

It's never a waste of thought to learn more about something and share your opinions. Previous generations would sit in pubs and front porches and shoot the poo; online discussion is a way to connect today.

The glorification of guns and gun violence in this country is one of the central issues of current society. Any discussion that leads to better awareness and understanding should not be viewed as a waste of time.

Wingmaster

Agree Lan and mostly well said.....well except for that last paragraph.

Lanivan

There's always some sort of 'but' with you....to some degree, on some level...

Wingmaster

As a centrist you should understand...butt...

Lanivan

As usual, I'm thinking it, but you take it to the next level and write it....
