Like most clergy in their training, I participated in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). In fact, I did much more than the several quarters that most denominations require — I studied and lived in Boston State Mental Hospital for nine months. I ate with the patients for my three meals a day, sometimes even sitting across from convicted murderers.

While walking the beach with a friend earlier this summer, she told us a sad story about her dad and her step mom. Her dad and mom had been married 52 years, until her mom died. Twelve years ago he remarried, to a woman whose husband had passed away. It sounds like a sweet story.
