While October is widely inundated with the color pink, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month - from ribbons to water bottles to pink newspaper - this month is also symbolized with the color purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

United Way campaign reaches 20% mark

Five weeks after the 2011-12 Community Campaign officially kicked off, Greater Ottawa County United Way has tallied more than 20 percent of its $2.3 million goal, thanks to results reported this week from workplace campaigns held in area companies.

Wind advisory

A wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. today for much of Lower Michigan, including Ottawa County. The National Weather Service said west winds will gust to 45-50 mph across the advisory area this afternoon. Driving in high winds will become difficult, particularly with higher-profile vehicles. Scattered power outages are possible this afternoon due to downed tree limbs onto power lines.

Monthly emergency siren test is Friday

The monthly siren test in Ottawa County will occur at noon Friday. Ottawa County Central Dispatch will coordinate the test, utilizing the county all-call activation tones and the cancel tone after approximately 2 minutes of activation. The tests are held on the first Friday of each month, March through November. The next scheduled test, the final one for 2011, is Nov. 4.

New system allows faster document certification in county

The Ottawa County Clerk's Office has entered the digital age when it comes to sending certified documents for residents and those doing business. The office recently took on a service called TrueCertify by ImageSoft, in which people can authenticate and deliver certified documents electronically, allowing the recipient to verify the document contents via the Internet.

Mentors sought for 4-H Tech Wizards program

The Ottawa County 4-H Tech Wizards program is seeking caring adults to become mentors for youth attending Central High School in Grand Haven and Van Raalte Tech in Holland. Mentors needed are professionals working in the related fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Applicants must be age 21 and older, willing to complete a background check and be able to commit two hours per week for one school year.
