A coastal flood warning is in effect for West Michigan's Lake Michigan shoreline, including Ottawa County, until 8 tonight. The National Weather Service said dangerously rapid changes in water levels are expected this afternoon, in response to the line of severe thunderstorms that crossed Lake Michigan this morning. Water levels will have large fluctuations through at least early this evening - most notably along all coastal beaches. Beach-goers should expect dangerous rip currents, too.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties until 11:15 a.m. NWS meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing hurricane-force wind gusts in excess of 75 mph. These storms were located over Lake Michigan at around 9:45 a.m. and moving east at 70 mph.

Ottawa County Undersheriff Greg Steigenga said there were no officers directly involved with assisting in the tragedy that played out in Grand Rapids on Thursday, but there were deputies stationed in squad cars at a few main roadways in the county.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for its 2011 Citizens Police Academy. The 12-week course will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 14 to Dec. 7 at the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, 12220 Fillmore St. There will be a graduation ceremony during the last class. Class participants will get a behind-the-scenes look of the Sheriff's Department, including a ride-along in a sheriff's car. The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Ottawa County until 5:30 p.m. today. Heavy rainfall with rates of more than 2 inches per hour has occurred across much of the county late this morning and early this afternoon. Runoff from the excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding to occur, especially along small streams and near low water crossings, according to the weather bureau. A flash flood watch remains in effect for Ottawa, Muskegon, Kent, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Mason, Lake, Oceana and Newaygo counties until 4 p.m. today.

A Spring Lake man is making a second attempt to recall state Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive. Jason Collins this week filed revised language for a recall petition to remove Meekhof from office. The Ottawa County elections office received the latest request on Wednesday. The proposed language, or the "reason' for the recall, was similar but condensed from a request Collins filed June 7.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has designated 54 doctors in Ottawa County as patient-centered medical home physicians. The designation places them among a select number of primary care physicians in Michigan who are improving health care quality and lowering costs through a more intensive focus on their patients' wellness, according to the health insurer. The PCMH care teams work with patients to keep them healthy and monitor their care on an ongoing basis. The teams coordinate patients' health care using registries to track their conditions.

Several thousand dollars worth of electronics, jewelry, guns and prescription medications have been reported stolen during a series of daytime home invasions which occurred on the east side of Ottawa County over the last couple of weeks, police said. Police are looking for help in identifying any possible suspects. Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the home invasions were reported between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at locations in Allendale, Tallmadge, Polkton and Jamestown townships. The incidents intensified on Monday, he said.
