A Grand Rapids teenager was reported in distress after the kayak he was riding in overturned on Lake Michigan in Port Sheldon early Friday evening. Three Grand Rapids teenagers - ages 15, 16 and 18 - were riding in a kayak, which overturned in waves shortly after 5 p.m., Ottawa County Sheriff's Sgt. Keith Garvelink said. Two of the teens were able to get back into the kayak, but the third did not. A witness on shore noticed the teen was in distress and called 911. Upon arrival, all three teens had made it to a sand bar and were okay.

The American Red Cross is looking for blood donors to help ensure blood is available when and where it's needed. The Red Cross is in special need of O negative-type blood - the universal blood type that can help all individuals needing transfusions. In an effort to help increase donor turnout, the Red Cross has partnered with Meijer to offer donors a chance to win gift cards from Meijer and Best Buy. A Spring Lake man has started an effort to recall state Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive. In his recall petition notice, Jason Collins, 117 N. Division St., said he wants Meekhof recalled for voting in favor of the state budget bill last month that was eventually signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. The Ottawa County clerk's elections office received the notice from Collins in the mail on Tuesday. Ottawa County Elections Coordinator Justin Roebuck said there is a concerted effort to recall state legislators who voted in support of the governor's budget.

An "action day' for elevated levels of ozone - when pollutants are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups' range - has been posted for Ottawa County today. The air quality advisory from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment also includes Muskegon, Kent, Allegan, Kalamazoo, Mason, Oceana and Van Buren counties. The forecast for the Grand Haven area today is for a high near 86 under mostly sunny skies, with south southwest winds between 14-16 mph, with gusts up to 26 mph.

The Ottawa County Health Department now accepts consumer electronic waste at its Resource Recovery Centers in Holland and Grand Haven, at no cost to residents. With residents continually updating electronic devices, the outdated products have become a significant waste stream in recent years, Health Department officials said. The Health Department plans to expand the service to its Coopersville and Jenison centers in the future.

Ottawa County Parks staff and members of Friends of Ottawa County Parks will offer the following activities highlighting the county's parks on that day: Activities at the Nature Education Center at Hemlock Crossing: - Join a naturalist-led walk at 9:30 a.m. - View a display of information about the county's newest parks, current park projects and pick up trail maps of popular parks. The Ottawa County Health Department will be offering their annual phone book recycling event during the month of June. A self-serve container will be at the Holland office of the Health Department, 12251 James St., from June 1-30. The telephone books collected will be recycled into building insulation.
