Blohm sets pool

record at SL Invitational

Mon, Oct 1, 2007

Andrea Blohm set a new Grand Haven Aquatic Center pool record in diving, helping her Lakers place fourth at the Spring Lake Invitational Saturday.

Blohm scored a 412.55, breaking her own record of 397.3 she set in the same meet last year.

"We were a bit concerned about how Andrea would dive, since she's had the flu for two days and still was not feeling very strong," said Spring Lake diving coach Barb Brackett. "Her dives looked strong and her concentration was even stronger."

Maria Kieft had the Lakers' other first-place finish as she won the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 3.79 seconds.

Grandville took home team honors with a score of 543, finishing ahead of Byron Center (409), Ludington (291), the Lakers (247), Unity Christian (197), Calvin Christian (195), Rockford (124) and Muskegon Catholic Central (75).

Spring Lake's Erin Mathews placed third in the 100 breaststroke while teammate Emily Zacek was eighth in that event.

The Lakers' 200 medley relay team of Kieft, Mathews, Anna Hamati and Meghan Bouman took third, and Hamati was seventh in the 200 individual medley. Diver Mckenna Vanderlaan placed eighth.

Hamati swam well in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while Riley Thyfault, Carly Ellinger, Shelby Sandoval, Alecia Crouse, Laura Lukkari, Clara Richter, Holleigh Swanson, Ryenn Boychuk, Jourdan Boychuk and Becca Larsen all had strong showings for the Lakers.

"Both Coach Brackett and I were very proud of the girls' performances," said Lakers' coach Penny Zacek. "The meet was their third competition this week, which is pretty challenging. We set 16 personal records, which the girls should be proud of."

The Lakers host Fremont Thursday at 6 p.m.
