NOVI (AP) — A 13-year-old Westland boy died Sunday after falling through thin ice on a Novi lake.

He was found unconscious after being in the lake for 90 minutes Sunday afternoon. He later died in a Royal Oak hospital.

Novi Police Chief David Malloy told The Detroit News the unidentified boy was visiting grandparents and went out for a walk with the family dog. Malloy said family members found small footprints leading to a hole in Village Oaks Lake after the dog returned home without the boy.

Oakland County divers recovered the unconscious boy about 20 feet away from the hole in chilly waters.
