Group wants recall in Holland airport tax vote

HOLLAND — A committee opposed to a new tax to support Tulip City Airport will ask for a recount in Zeeland, Holland Area Taxpayers spokesman Al Friend said.

"If it will make a difference, who knows, but at least we'll have made an effort to make sure the count is accurate," he said.

Voters in Zeeland passed the 0.10-mill tax by just four votes Tuesday.

If Zeeland's result was reversed, it would nullify the West Michigan Airport Authority and four-municipality tax that passed Tuesday in Zeeland, Holland and Park Township, but failed in Holland Township.

The Ottawa County Board of Canvassers started its official count today and will likely be finished early next week, Ottawa County Elections Coordinator Brooke Slagle said. A recount can be requested up to six days after the official count is complete, she said.
