Smith sitting in first after Day 2 of NJCAA tourney

Muskegon Community College's Garrett Smith sits in first place after Day 2 of the NJCAA Division II national tournament, which is being held at Palm Valley Golf Course in Phoenix.

Smith, who shot an opening-round 63, was 14 shots worse Wednesday as he carded a five-over-par 77. However, the rest of the field also struggled, with first-round leader Blaine Weiterman shooting an 81.

Smith, a recent Grand Haven High School graduate, leads by two strokes over Brent Hobbs of Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.
