The Grand Haven golf team won its first-ever tournament during Roger Glass' eight-year tenure as head coach of the program Wednesday.
As deep and talented as the Bucs are this season, it might be the first of many.
Grand Haven blew away the field at the O-K Red preseason tournament at The Meadows Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State in Allendale, finishing with a team score of 368. The next closest school was Hudsonville, who was 13 strokes behind. East Kentwood was third with a 396, followed by Grandville (414), West Ottawa (419), Rockford (436) and Jenison (487).
"It was a really great day," Glass said. "To have our highest score be a 110, that was incredible. That shows we're pretty deep.
"Every other team had its three top scores and then they really dropped off. But with us, all of our scores were right there bunched together."
Senior Collette Hansen continued her blistering start to the season, shooting a 2-over par 75, good for second medalist. Hudsonville's Alanna Gerber was the top individual performer, shooting a even-par 73.
Grand Haven's Audrey Austin and Terrin Jerovsek were ranked sixth and seventh overall, with rounds of 93 and 98, respectively.
"To have three girls in the top 10 is outstanding," Glass said.
Emily Bethune shot a 102, Abby Case added a 106, and Alex Merz rounded out the scoring with a 110.
"This counts at one-quarter of the (final results) in the O-K Red, so we're right where we want to be," Glass said. "We just hope to keep on rolling."
SL DOMINATES
LAKES 8
A total of four golfers who shot under 50 helped propel the Spring Lake golf team to its second straight victory in Lakes Eight Conference Jamborees.
The Lakers easily topped runner-up and host Fruitport Wednesday. Spring Lake finished with a team score of 185, and the Trojans totaled 206. Fremont was third with a 213, followed by Tri-County's 223, and Ludington's 257.
Senior Emily Rosencrants turned in the low score for Spring Lake with a 43. Brianna Striker (45), Kerry Ryan (48), and Eryn Gregory (49) also were under 50. Katelyn Bonter just barely missed making it five under 50 for Spring Lake, as she finished with a 51. Jaime Rosema carded a 54.
The Trojans, who were six strokes away from winning their first-ever meet in school history at the recent Newaygo Invitational, were led by Andrea Jones' 46 Wednesday. Karlyn Crotty added a 47.
After two jamborees, Spring Lake holds a 372-447 lead over Fruitport at the top of the Lakes Eight leaderboard.
