Impact is the most important part of the golf swing. To keep impact simple, you must hit the ball with a square clubface and with a slightly inside-to-out swing path.
Simple steps to achieve impact:
1. Make a conscious effort to strike the inside portion of the ball. Place the logo of your ball not directly behind the ball, but turn the ball a quarter inch toward you (while the ball is on a tee) and use that logo as your target. If you can strike the inside portion of the ball with the club during the downswing, then your swing path will travel inside-out.
2. Square the clubface drill: in slow motion, practice by allowing the toe of the clubface to get to the ball before the heal. If the toe of the club comes into the ball just prior to the heal, and you swing inside out (hit the logo), your ball flight will start slightly to the right and curve back in toward the target (producing a draw). Most golfers' club heads come into the ball with the heal of the club beating the toe and that produces a slice.
3. You have just hit a draw, and that will result in both added distance and accuracy.
Note: Many types of drills are "overcompensations" to get the student to learn quickly. Teaching reality doesn't allow for the student to learn at an accelerated rate.
