Thu, Mar 27, 2008    to del.icio.us

Grand Haven's varsity girls soccer opened its season Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over host Mona Shores.

A pair of newcomers to the varsity squad provided the Bucs' two goals. Freshman Aliina Weykamp scored in the opening half on an assist from Sam Dykema, then Andrea Norman scored in the second half, with Emily Bunn providing the assist.

Katie Malnight earned the shutout in goal for the Buccaneers, and saw solid play in front of her by defenders Kelly Boers, Evan Creswell, Sarah Rose, Krista Clement and Paige Wilds.

"It's a good start to the season, both teams starting off with wins," said coach Cor Damhuis, noting that the JV squad won, 3-0. "You could see that it was our first game. It showed us what we need to work on, but it was a good start."

Grand Haven is back in action Friday, when the Bucs host the Holland Dutch at 6:45 p.m.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Sarah Kober scored three goals in the Buccaneers' 3-0 victory over Mona Shores. Currin Hall, Keaghan Ottenbaker and Alex Merz played well for Grand Haven.

Lauren Gagnon scored just 90 seconds in and Haley Smith finished with a hat trick as Spring Lake opened its season with a 5-2 victory over Coopersville Wednesday.

Tara Lensneski also scored for the Lakers.

"Lauren played very well, distributed the ball and was dangerous all the time. They marked her, and that left other players open," coach Jeremy Thelen said. "Offensively, Lauren and Haley really made us go. Defensively, I was impressed with Emily Clauss and Abby Deur."

Rachel Kilbry and Stefanie Pellegrom split time in goal.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Spring Lake scored a 4-0 win, with Jenny Kalejs scoring all four of the Lakers' goals.
