Fruitport's softball squad has a lineup that has produced all season, leading to a 10-win improvement from a year ago.
Monday, that lineup waited until its last chance to take charge against Muskegon Catholic Central, but it sure came up big.
Trailing 12-7 in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2 of the team's doubleheader, the Trojans scored six runs to stun the Crusaders and complete the sweep.
Fruitport improves to 23-8 overall.
"It was just a great comeback from the girls," Fruitport coach Bob Dorman said. "We really wanted to focus on team play tonight and we needed everyone to pull this out."
Fruitport quickly loaded the bases in the seventh, scored a run on a bases loaded walk, and added two more on a double from Kirstin Hughes. With runners at second and third, MCC's pitcher threw a wild pitch, allowing Brooke Bolek to score. Whitney Stratton then drilled a game-tying triple off the fence.
Lauren LeMieux ended the thrilling rally in Fruitport's next at-bat, tallying the game-winning single, driving in Stratton from third.
Stratton finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while LeMieux was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Fruitport had a little more breathing room in the opener, winning 11-3. Stratton again swung a big bat, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. LeMieux was 2-for-3 and Kim Krbez was 2-for-4.
"Our seniors led the way," Dorman said. "We said we wanted to close the (regualar season) strong and step up with these games left to play."
