Lakers dominate Lakes 8 tourney

Spring Lake left no doubt as to who is the dominant team in the Lakes Eight Conference.

The Lakers won seven of eight flights during the conference tournament Saturday at Ludington, with the Orioles' Gavin Sanders preventing a complete sweep by winning the No. 4 singles flight.

The Lakers and Orioles finished 1-2 in both Saturday's team scores and the overall finish in league. Grant was third, followed by Fremont, Fruitport and Orchard View.

David Cook, Tyler Fedewa and Alek Kihnke each scored straight-set victories in singles flights for Spring Lake. Cook topped Fremont's Paul Blais, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1; Fedewa defeated Ludington's Joe Larson, 6-4, 6-2; and Kihnke rolled past Fremont's Tyler Krim, 6-3, 6-2.

Sanders cruised past Fruitport's Jake Johnson in the third flight, 6-1, 6-1.

Spring Lake had a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins among their doubles champions, including Nate Lee and Ben Esh-Nauta at No. 1, and Kurt Hendricks and Christian Yoshonis at No. 3.

Ray Strobel and Lance Fredrickson won comfortably at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4, and Grant Evans and Josh Peel scored a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 4.

Spring Lake hosts the Division 3 regional Thursday. The Lakers will be joined by Cadillac, Comstock Park, Coopersville, Fremont, Fruitport, Ludington, Orchard View, Petoskey and Sparta.

BUCS FINISH 5TH

Grand Haven took fourth in the O-K Conference meet Saturday, and combined with their 2-3-1 conference record, finished in fifth place overall in the final league standings.

Blake Schultz and Spencer Krug placed second at Saturday's conference meet at No. 2 doubles, while Jordan Hoogerhyde and Scott Deater took second at fourth doubles.

Thomas Sleva and Nathan VanArendonk were fourth at third doubles, and Max Bradley and Trevor Soule finished fifthat first doubles.

The top singles finisher for the Bucs was Mitchell Borchers, who was fourth at No. 3. Brenden Magnan took fifth at No. 2 singles; Arjun Biddanda was sixth at fourth singles; and Farid Damasio placed seventh at No. 1 singles.
