TROJANS EDGED
Fruitport, playing shorthanded due to a rash of injuries, suffered a 5-4 loss to Mona Shores Wednesday as the Sailors scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Trojans were without their leadoff batter, their starting shortstop and their No. 1 catcher, along with their normal right fielder and their backup catcher.
Sophomore Mario Flores took the mound and threw a strong game, going all seven innings. He issued just one walk. Freshman Kody Schultz was called up to fill in at catcher, and he played outstanding behind the dish, according to coach Paul Masko.
Dom Rizzo paced the Trojans' offense as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI double. Robert Afton, Mitch Blackmer and Nick Brezina each added a pair of hits as the Trojans finished with 11 hits against the Sailors' Chris Mattson.
The Trojans will try for win No. 20 when they host Oakridge this afternoon.
