WEST OLIVE A 6-inch sewer main in front of the home at 12112 Stanton St. was pierced Tuesday morning by an underground contractor who was boring under the road to install a telephone service line, county officials said.
The sewer line serviced Olive Township customers of the West Central Ottawa Wastewater Treatment Plant. The mishap took place near the site of the new Ottawa County 911 Central Dispatch Center.
Pat Staskiewicz, public utilities engineer for the Ottawa County Road Commission, said the county was notified of the leaking sewer about three hours after it happened. The county crew said the leak was confined to a roadway ditch and was not flowing off the site.
"One sewer pump station and one sewer customer was shut down while repairs were made," Staskiewicz said. "Service was not interrupted at the (nearby) Ottawa County Fillmore Street Complex. Less than 1,000 gallons of sewer was spilled onto the ground, where it was then vacuum-pumped and trucked to a wastewater treatment system."
Service was restored to the affected area by 6 p.m.
