Softball roundup: Grandville pounds Buccaneers

Thu, May 22, 2008    to del.icio.us

Kate Riggs had two base hits, and Kady Foote and Chelsea Meloche also added base hits, but that was all the offense Grand Haven could muster in a 12-1 loss to Grandville.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the second, then three more times in the third to take control.

Shelley Bultje pitched the opening four innings, with Meloche pitching the final two frames of the six-inning game.

Shaye Sutton played well at shortstop, and Amy Tiles had a nice game at third for the Buccaneers.

Grand Haven's lone run came in the third inning as Melissa Raha was hit by a pitch and eventually worked her way around the bases.

The Bucs are back in action tonigh tas they host Holland for a single game.

TROJANS DROP 2

Fruitport softball dropped its third and fourth straight games Wednesday, losing a pair to Mona Shores after being swept by league rival Newaygo on Tuesday.

The Sailors took Game 1, 3-1, in a well-played contest that lasted just a little over an hour.

Fruitport couldn't figure out Sailors' pitcher Megan Decker, one of the area's top hurlers. Whitney Stratton had a hit and scored the Trojans' lone run. Mona Shores was paced by Devin Parker, who had all three Sailors' RBIs.

Fruitport coach Bob Dorman pitched senior Lauren LeMieux in Game 2 — the first time she's pitched this season.

"We wanted to rest our pitchers. The upcoming districts are far more important," Dorman said.

Mona Shores took advantage of LeMieux's inexperience, winning easily, 14-3.

Fruitport (23-12 overall) closes out its brutal seven-game week with a home contest against Oakridge today.
