SOUTH BEND, Ind. Alfredo Figaro improved to 6-1 on the season by allowing just two hits in 7 2-3 innings of the Whitecaps 4-1 victory over South Bend.
The Silver Hawks loaded the bases with one out in both the first and sixth innings, thanks to five walks issued by Figaro. But Figaro used a double play in the first and a pop out followed by a strike out in the sixth to maintain the shutout at each juncture. Roger Tomas and Joe Tucker had back-to-back RBI singles to put the Whitecaps on top, 2-0 in the third inning.
In the sixth, Chris Carlson led off with a double and came home on a double by Kody Kaiser. Kaiser then scored on a single by Cory Middleton.
All four West Michigan runs were charged to Silver Hawks starting pitcher Christian Beltre.
Eli Rumler singled with one out in the first before Figaro issued two walks to load the bases. Figaro then retired 14 batters in a row before he issued three straight walks to load the bases again in the sixth.
The Silver Hawks had just one hit until the eighth inning when Figaro and Santo Mieses each allowed singles.
