FERRYSBURG Discussion concerning a motorized equipment millage was heated during the City Council meeting Monday night.
Council members were unsure of voter approval for renewal of the millage, which budgets for new police cruisers and fire trucks.
"I'm intimidated by the fact that it has to go to ballot, but it's really a positive millage," Councilman Tom Spoelman said of the millage, which expires at the end of the year.
Councilman Chris Larson, the lone dissenter on the motion, said now is not a good time to ask residents for more money. He suggested waiting for renewal until the next scheduled replacement a fire truck in 2010.
"Let us use the money when we need it, then use a lower total to approach voters," Larson said. "With careful planning we could maintain a balance without asking taxpayers for money."
However, council voted in favor of bringing the millage renewal to voters on the Nov. 4 ballot. Council members decided to ask for renewal of the millage at a lower rate from 1.25 mills to 1 mill.
