ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP A man was killed early Thursday morning after rolling a homemade go kart into a ditch and becoming trapped underneath it.
According to Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, police and ambulance personnel were called to the area of 96th Avenue just south of Pierce Street in Allendale Township at around 12:30 a.m. to a report of a go kart upside down in the ditch.
When they arrived on scene, they found 26-year-old Jeremy John Green of Zeeland pinned under the go kart face down in approximately two feet of ditch water, Ruster said.
Green was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital, Ruster said, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy, he said.
An investigation revealed that Green was driving north on 96th Avenue when he lost control of the go kart, Ruster said, sliding sideways into the ditch on the east side of the road. He was not wearing a seatbelt or safety harness, Ruster said.
The accident remains under investigation.
