Sportswriter gets probation for growing marijuana

GRAND RAPIDS A judge today sentenced a Grand Rapids Press sports columnist to three years probation for growing dozens of marijuana plants in his home.
David Mayo was also fined $5,000 and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
Mayo pled guilty last week to a charge of delivery or manufacture of marijuana. The charge was punishable to up to four years in prison.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped other charges, including operating a grow house.
Kent County Sheriff's deputies arrested Mayo and his wife, Denise, in February after searching their Grand Rapids Township home and finding 71 marijuana plants, along with marijuana in Mason jars.
Denise Mayo also pled guilty to a charge of operating a grow house. Prosecutors dropped other charges against her. She will be sentenced in August.
The Grand Rapids Press suspended David Mayo with pay following his arrest.
