MARNE A man working to remove debris left over from wind and storms earlier in the week was injured Thursday when the tree he was removing from some power lines fell on him.
Fremont native Robert Allen Pierce, 39, began running away from the tree to avoid it as it began to fall, Sgt. Kevin Allman of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said, but he slipped, fell and the tree fell on him.
Emergency crews were called to the scene near 3025 Buchanan St. in Marne at 10:55 a.m., Allman said. An employee of Trees Inc., Pierce was contracted to cut and trim trees for ITC Inc., Allman said, and was able to extricate himself from underneath the tree while a co-worker called 911.
According to Allman, Pierce was taken to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids in serious condition. He was in fair condition this morning, hospital officials said.
