Mon, Nov 9, 2009    to del.icio.us

Spring Lake wrapped up the first girls swimming and diving Coastal Conference championship in school history on Saturday as the Lakers cruised to first place in the league meet.

The home team earned 571 points, well ahead of second-place Ludington, which finished with 385.5 points. South Haven was next at 352.5, followed by Muskegon Catholic Central (259), Fremont (231) and Manistee (78).

The Lakers earned first-team all-conference in five events, including the 200-yard medley relay, where Maria Kieft, Lydia Gleason, Laura Lukkari and Meg Bouman took first place with a time of 1 minute, 55.34 seconds.

Riley Thyfault won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:27.69. Becca Mumby was the diving league champion with a score of 339.35 as all five of Spring Lake's divers placed in the top eight overall. Courtney Grabman was fourth at 266.15, followed by Brianne Kunkel, Blair Kunkel and Danielle Reaume.

Kieft won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.67, and Gleason was the league champ in the 100 breaststroke at 1:12.23.

Ginny Cotterall was second in the 500 freestyle while Erin Kuester and Chelsea Rick helped the Lakers take second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Annie Steinlage was an all-conference honorable mention for her showing in the 100 breaststroke.

"Over the course of the two-day meet, we recorded 77 personal-best times in individual events and set three school records," coach Penny Zacek said.

Those records included Gleason's swim in the 100 breaststroke and the Lakers' 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

"Our girls were completely focused on performing their best and bringing home their first-ever conference championship," Zacek said.

Currin Hall won the 100 butterfly race at Saturday's O-K Red Conference championship meet, helping Grand Haven place sixth out of seven teams.

State-ranked West Ottawa ran away with the league title, scoring 465 points. Rockford was second with 366, followed by Hudsonville (361), Jenison (357.5), Grandville (203), Grand Haven (172.5) and East Kentwood (122).

"The story of the weekend was Currin winning the 100 butterfly," Grand Haven coach Casey Jensen said. "That was a pretty big upset and a huge swim by Currin. She won that race not just with her swim but also with her walls. She buried her head that last 10 yards and didn't take a breath."

Gretchen Spoelman placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.95, and Hall also took fifth in the 50 freestyle with a personal-best time of 25.32 seconds.

The Bucs' Hannah Meade, Spoelman, Hall and Emily Dean took fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.45. The Bucs' 200 freestyle relay also took fourth as Spoelman, Lydia Hoogerhyde, Dean and Hall swam a time of 1:45.18.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Meade, Erin Page, Alicia Land and Hoogerhyde took sixth with a time of 3:52.8.
