The Downtown Light Night drew people into shops and restaurants with storefronts decorated for the holidays, the traditional white lights shining in the trees lining Washington Avenue and holiday lights decorating the chain-link fence surrounding the downtown construction project.
Several stores offered sales, food and refreshments for shoppers.
Roger Jonas, a member of the Grand Haven Rotary Club, said the Christmas decorations had been used the past two years by the club in its holiday light display on Harbor Island. But since the light show's originator returned the show to his Spring Lake Township home this year, the Rotary Club got together with the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority to spruce up the fence on the first block of the downtown.
It was quick work. Jonas said DDA Director Dana Kollewehr contacted him about the lights, and they decided just a week ago to go ahead with the decorations. Following city approval, the lighted decorations were turned on for the first time Friday.
When the construction project moves to the second block which is expected next month Jonas said the Christmas decorations will go there, too.
