Wrestling roundup: Lakers take 3rd at Bangor

A first-place finish by 119-pounder Tyler Nietering and three runner-up finishes by Rob Mcnamara, Larry Seitz and Andrew Holmes propelled the Spring Lake wrestling squad to a third-place finish at Saturday's Bangor Invitational.

With his showing, which included a pin in the finals, Nietring improved his season record to a solid 18-2.

The tournament was originally scheduled to feature 16 teams, however, three teams backed out because of the snowy weather. The Lakers' 'B' squad also competed at the event, and finished 12th.

Other strong showings by the Lakers included third-place finishes by Harry Kriger at 112 pounds and CR Mohrhardt at 145 pounds. Unseeded 160-pounder Drew Backett upset Shane Dunkin of Mattawan and placed fourth, while Hunter Groover (125 pounds), David Ritchie (130), Rob Batts (135), and AJ Modak (140) each finished fifth.

FRUITPORT FINISHES 2-3 AT GL

Fruitport's David Amburgy recorded a pin in the 125-pound weight class in the last match againt Highland Park to lift the Trojans to a 39-33 victory at Saturday's Grand Ledge Invitational.

The win improved Fruitport's record to 2-3 at the invitational. The Trojans also defeated Lansing Everett, 57-22. Fruitport suffered losses to West Ottawa (55-16); Greenville (63-10); and Mason (48-27).

Brandon Brown completed a 5-0 performance at 103 pounds for the Trojans, a showing that was matched by 112-pounder Tyler Pastor.
