INDIAN RIVER (AP) Police say a 64-year-old Indianapolis man drowned in a northern Michigan river after his canoe capsized.
The Cheboygan Daily Tribune reported David Chattin and his wife were headed to Copper Harbor in the western Upper Peninsula for a fall color tour when they stopped Saturday in Indian River for a short canoe trip.
Robert Wagner, police chief in Cheboygan County's Tuscarora Township, said the couple was canoeing around a bend in the Sturgeon River when their canoe capsized, throwing them both into cold water.
According to WWMT-TV in Cadillac, Chattin's wife told police they both tried to get back in the canoe but it overturned, trapping her husband underwater. Chattin later was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
