West Olive girl, 17, involved in fatal crash

LOWELL TOWNSHIP — A Grand Rapids man died Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 96 near Lowell.

State Police said a preliminary investigation shows 17-year-old Erica Slagter of West Olive lost control of the sport utility vehicle she was driving at around 9 a.m. near Morse Lake Road in Lowell Township. Her car side-swiped another SUV, driven by Juan Hilton of Grand Rapids, police said.

The impact forced Hilton's vehicle into a ditch and it rolled over, police said.

Hilton and two passengers in his SUV were taken to area hospitals. A third passenger, 26-year-old Andres Martinez of Grand Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
