GRAND RAPIDS (AP) The former executive director of the Benton Harbor Housing Commission has been indicted on embezzlement and Social Security fraud charges.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Grand Rapids said Friday that a grand jury has accused 67-year-old Barbara J. Hollowell, of Kansas City, Kan., of using housing commission money for personal reasons.
A commission credit card was used to withdraw more than $12,000 between January 2007 and June 2008. Those bills were paid from various commission accounts.
Authorities say more than $8,000 in grant money also was embezzled last year, and that Hollowell collected early retirement benefits while failing to report earned income above allowable limits.
