With just over a month to go, the group pushing to get rid of Ottawa County's ban on Sunday beer and wine sales has more than a quarter of the necessary signatures.

The Say Yes to Sunday group said this morning they have collected 10,057 signatures since starting the drive June 20. The group has until Aug. 12 to obtain the "John Hancocks" of 38,000 Ottawa County residents.

"I think people have been a little slow to link onto this," Say Yes to Sunday spokesman Jim Storey said. "One of the problems is that a lot of the people in the industry don't believe this can happen, because a lot of the attempts haven't been as organized as we are."

But with three major events on the docket before the deadline, the effort still has hope, Storey said.

Say Yes to Sunday plans to canvas at the upcoming Berlin Fair in Marne, the Ottawa County Fair in Park Township and the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, he said.

"It is time to get this ball rolling," said Scott Screptock, owner of Northside Party Store in Holland. "We need every business and every worker who has a stake in the health of our local hospitality industry involved and active in this effort."

The committee has 86 locations where voters can sign the petition, including many in the Tri-Cities area.

Grand Haven businesses accepting signatures are Applebee's, Clover Bar, Frank's Market, American Legion Post No. 28, Oasis, Mobil, Eagles Post No. 925, Damon's, Highway Inn, Porto Bello, Pavilion Bar & Grille, Bil-Mar Restaurant, Santo Stefano Del Lago, Sportsmen Bar, Sunflower Gourmet, Rosebud, The Kirby House, Mugs Party Store, Seaway Party Store, Tip A Few Tavern, Grand Haven Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lucy's Market, VFW Post No. 2326 and Pizza Hut.

In Spring Lake, Old Boys' Brewhouse, Stan's Bar, Jack's Restaurant, Orchard Market have petitions.

The Shoreline Market in Ferrysburg and Champs Bar in Coopersville are also collecting signatures.
