Man who used Cameroon teen like a slave loses appeal

Wed, Aug 20, 2008    to del.icio.us

DETROIT (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a Michigan man who brought a 14-year-old to the U.S. from Cameroon and treated her like a slave.

Joseph Djoumessi of Farmington Hills claimed he couldn't be prosecuted by the federal government because a state jury already had cleared him of kidnapping. But the appeals court ruled today it wasn't a case of double jeopardy.

In 2005, a federal judge found Djoumessi guilty of involuntary servitude and other charges and sentenced him to 17 years in federal prison. He's now in a Michigan prison serving a state sentence for sexually abusing the girl.
