After experiencing some struggles throughout the first month of their season, the Grand Haven volleyball squad now appears to be clicking.
The Bucs continued their strong start to the O-K Red Conference season Thursday, as they upset No. 7-ranked Rockford on its home floor in a sweep, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24. Grand Haven is an honorable mention pick in Division 1.
"The kids came out ready to play right from the start," Bucs' coach Aaron Smaka said. "There was no hesitation. Obviously there were some close games, but they remained focused throughout. They played hard, trusted each other and got the job done."
Smaka said outside hitter Mindy Marx continues to elevate her game, and she played a big role in helping topple the Rams. The 6-foot junior with tremendous leaping ability totaled 11 kills and seven blocks. Senior outside hitter/setter Stacy Kalsbeek also shined in a number of areas, tallying seven kills, 16 assists, eight service points and three blocks.
"But a nice thing to see was our great balance," Smaka added. "We had Lauren Stolarz, Bri Soule and Andrea Norman with four kills each."
Power passed extremely well and contributed 16 digs. Recent varsity call-up Kristen Reenders served tough with seven points.
Grand Haven (17-9-2, 3-0 O-K Red) plays in the Portage Northern Invitational Saturday.
