Car ferry author to speak at LDL Thursday

Wed, May 20, 2009    to del.icio.us

Grant Brown, author of "90 Years Crossing Lake Michigan," will discuss his book in the program room of the Loutit District Library, 1051 S. Beacon Blvd., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Brown's book begins with the Ann Arbor ferries in 1892 that shook the transportation world by doing what was then deemed impossible — carrying loaded railroad cars by ship across the 62 miles of open water between Frankfort, Mich., and Kewaunee, Wis. He continues in depth with the nearly 100 years of crossings until the Michigan Interstate Railway Co. closed in 1982.

The free event is part of The Michigan Notable Books program, which annually selects 20 of the most notable books published in the year. The selections are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary and cultural experience.

For more information, call the library at 842-5560, ext. 214.
