Cedar Rapids' Davitt, Carmona blank 'Caps

Mon, Jul 28, 2008    to del.icio.us

COMSTOCK PARK — Michael Davitt pitched seven shutout innings for Cedar Rapids and combined with Ysmael Carmona to defeat the Whitecaps, 5-0.

It was the 11th time this season that the Whitecaps have been shutout, which is the most since West Michigan was blanked 16 times in 1998.

Manny Miguelez held the Kernels scoreless until the fourth inning when Andrew Romine led off with a ground rule double. He scored three batters later on a two-out single by Efren Navarro.

In the fifth, the Kernels tallied a pair of unearned runs when shortstop Audy Ciriaco made a throwing error with two out that allowed Romine to reach base and Clay Fuller to score from second base. Julio Perez then drove in Romine with an RBI single against reliever Paul Nardozzi.

Perez gave Cedar Rapids a 5-0 lead on a two-run single in the seventh inning.

Davitt allowed seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Carmona pitched the final two innings and yielded just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts.

Cedar Rapids has won the first two games in the series following an eight game losing streak. West Michigan had won five of its last six games prior to Saturday's series opener.

Romine scored three times in the game. Jay Brossman went 3-for-4 for the Kernels.
