TROJANS TIE GRANT
Playing with a full lineup for the first time all season, the Fruitport Trojans' tennis squad opened Lakes Eight Conference action Wednesday with a tie against Grant.
Senior Curtis Jones recently joined the squad, and coach Brad Busscher instantly inserted him into the lineup at No. 2 doubles. Jones and sophomore Jeremiah Parker nearly pulled off a win against the Tigers, but eventually fell in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
"They played well," Busscher said. "For it being their first time together all season, they showed a good amount of teamwork on the court."
The Trojans' singles players swept the Tigers as Jon Erny (No. 1, 6-0, 6-2), Noah Armstrong (No. 2, 6-4, 6-0), John Sullivan (No. 3, 6-1, 6-4), and Jake Johnson (No. 4, 6-2, 6-2), each scored straight-set victories.
Blaine Curtis and Ben Bos put up a good fight at No. 1 doubles, but fell 6-2, 7-5.
"They haven't played together much since we've had to move kids around for the first few weeks, but they played well," Busscher said. "Hopefully our top doubles flights can continue to improve."
Fruitport is off until Monday, when it travels to battle fellow league foe Ludington.
