Open houses mark Fire Prevention Week

Sunday marks the beginning of Fire Prevention Week, and several local fire departments are planning to mark the week with activities to raise awareness of the dangers that home fires pose.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the United States every 22 seconds. In the approximately 1.5 million fires reported in 2008, 3,320 people were killed and 16,705 people were injured. The fires also caused an estimated $15.5 billion in direct damage.
Fire Prevention Week the longest-running public health and safety observance on record focuses on ways to prevent fires.
Here's a schedule of open houses planned by local fire departments:
Crockery Township
When: Open house is Monday, Oct. 5, 6-9 p.m.
Where: Township fire station, 16875 Main St., Nunica
Spring Lake Township
When: Open house is Thursday, Oct. 8, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Station No. 1, 16681 148th Ave., Spring Lake Township
Grand Haven
When: Open house is Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, 525 Washington Ave.
Ferrysburg
When: Open house is Monday, Oct. 12, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Fire barn, 17411 North Shore Road, Ferrysburg
Grand Haven Township
When: Open house is Tuesday, Oct. 13, 5:30-8 p.m.
Where: Grand Haven Township Fire Station, 13300 168th Ave.
