Grand Havens Pete Goers and Stevo VanderWerp didn't know what to expect when they decided to play together during the Midwest Professional Volleyball Associaton season.
But after Saturday's MPVA season championship final, they left no doubt they were the best team on the beach. The duo capped an undefeated season by overwhelming second-seed Ben Mol and Brad Pieditis, 21-10, 21-13 in the finals.
It was the fourth and final event of the MPVA season which featured 28 men's and 13 women's teams and a host of amateur and youth teams consuming all 24 courts at the packed Grand Haven State Park.

With a big wind, the Grand Haven duo of Goers and Vanderwerp thrived against their competition with their exceptional ball control and setting, and handled it better than the other teams. In the process, they completed a undefeated season, losing only two games during the stretch. Perhaps the best men's match of the day was when Goers and VanderWerp were pushed to three games by the fourth-seeded team of Brandyn Thorsen and Kyle Radde, 18-21, 21-18, 15-13 in the quarterfinals.
It was much different in the women's final as Sara Lieber and Tracy Sledz won a thrilling three-game match against Cathryn Babcock and Sarah VanderMolen, 9-21, 21-15, 16-14.
The MPVA is already working on the 2009 season and has six events scheduled. For complete details or more information, go to www.mpva.com.
