No change in Robinson Township's millage rate

Robinson Township's millage rate for 2008 will remain the same as last year, but taxpayers will still see a slight increase in their taxes.

The Robinson Township Board held a public truth-in-taxation hearing Monday that is required under the Headlee Amendment, which reduces the millage rate by a fraction each year and lowers the maximum number of mills that the township can levy against its residents.

The township levied 2.48 mills to its residents in 2007 and is proposing to levy the same rate for the 2008 tax year.

The proposed 2008 allocated millage is broken down into .9047 mills for the township operating millage, 1.3506 mills for the fire department operating millage and .2247 mil for the fire department's equipment millage.

However, while the millage rate remains the same for 2008, taxpayers in Robinson Township will see an increase in their tax bill due to the 2.3 percent Consumer Price Index, or CPI, rate and new construction, according to Treasurer Bonnie Hayward.

The truth-in-taxation hearing allows municipalities to increase taxes, but no more than the 2.3 percent Consumer Price Index rate or 5 percent, whichever is less, Hayward said.

"The millage rate didn't change, but we're collecting more taxes because of new construction," she said Monday.

A homeowner with a taxable value of just under $74,000 will see an increase of $4.13, according to Hayward.
