GRAND RAPIDS The West Michigan ThunderHawks franchise now has a new face to go with its new home at the DeltaPlex Arena.
Former Grand Valley State quarterback Brad Iciek, a Grandville native, has signed with the Indoor Football League team for the upcoming 2010 season which begins Feb. 26.
Iciek led the Lakers to a 36-4 record during his three years as a starter including a run to the 2009 Div. II national championship game. In November he became only the third student-athlete to be selected as a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy for three consecutive seasons. The award is given annually to the best Division II player in the country.
Iciek followed in the footsteps of former GVSU standout signal-callers Curt Anes and Cullen Finnerty and finished his career as the most efficient passer in school history, throwing for 8,461 yards and 98 touchdowns. Last year he passed for 3,194 yards, 35 touchdowns and only three interceptions and was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team. He was also named the GLIAC's Offensive Back of the Year for his stellar senior season.
Iciek cemented his legacy at the Allendale campus by guiding the Lakers to three straight league crowns during his tenure, running the school's current overall streak to five GLIAC titles in a row. In 2007 he helped continue the school's string of victories as the Lakers won their 40th consecutive game, setting a new DII mark.
At Grandville, Iciek made the grade as a Detroit News All-Stater and First Team All-O-K Red Conference selection. He threw for 1,973 yards and 21 touchdowns during his senior season and also played baseball and basketball for the Bulldogs.
