Spring Lake and Fruitport each took care of business in their respective Class B district semifinal games on Wednesday, creating a finals match-up between the two rivals tonight at Orchard View High School.
The Lakers struggled somewhat in their early games against Oakridge, but senior setter Taylor Keyser's hot serving sparked Spring Lake (32-16-1) to a sweep, 25-16, 25-18, 25-10.
"We had to turn in a little bit of a comeback early on," Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said. "But Taylor Keyser did a great job of serving. She put us ahead with quite a string of serves in both games. Then in the third game we took control. I believe it was 16-4 at one point."
Keyser finished with a team-high 19 points as well as seven aces, to go along with 16 digs and 26 assists. Her favorite target to set was Kaitlyn Mulder, who smacked down 11 kills and also added eight points, two aces and 10 digs.
Louise Silverman also served tough with 11 points and three aces, while Rachel Kilbry had a team-best six blocks.
Fruitport improved to 41-11 overall this season as it cruised past the host Cardinals in three games, 25-10, 25-16, 25-15.
Junior Sam Geile had a big performance for the Trojans, as she totaled an impressive 13 kills, as well as a team-best five blocks.
Julie Larson led another Fruitport strength its serving with 21 points and four aces. Setter Lauren Hazekamp finished with 26 assists, and sophomore Bre Geile tallied five digs.
Fruitport, which is ranked No. 6 in the latest state volleyball poll, will be in search of its fifth-straight district championship.
