College roundup: GVSU soccer reaches D-II title game

TAMPA, FLA. — Kristin Eible's goal 4 minutes, 54 seconds into overtime lifted the Grand Valley State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the College of Saint Rose (N.Y.) Thursday in the NCAA Division II semifinals.

The championship game is 1 p.m. Saturday.

Irie Dennis assisted on Eible's decisive tally for GVSU (21-0-4 overall).

The Lakers netted three unanswered goals after falling behind by two 2:47 into the match.

Erin Mruz cut Grand Valley's deficit to 2-1 4:55 into the match, but the Lakers didn't even the score until Jaleen Dingledine's unassisted goal at 82:58.

GVSU outshot Saint Rose (24-1) 19-11. Grand Valley goalie Chelsea Parise made two saves.

TAYLOR ADVANCES AT NAIA NATIONALS

The NAIA Volleyball National Championship Tournament started with 24 teams and has now been whittled down to 12 — including Taylor University.

The Trojans, which feature local graduates Colleen Nelis of Grand Haven and Jackie Geile of Fruitport, advanced by sweeping the University of Mobile (Ala.), 25-17, 25-22, 25-20. Taylor completed pool play with a 2-1 record, with its only loss coming Wednesday against California Baptist.

The Trojans will face Lee (Tenn.) University in the single elimination format beginning today at 12:30 p.m. The winner advances to face Northwestern (Iowa) College in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. today.

Against Mobile, Geile led a balanced Taylor attack with 11 kills, while Nelis led the team with two blocks.
