Six Grand Haven players scored eight or more points in the Buccaneers' 64-49 win over Traverse City Central on Friday night in Traverse City.
The Buccaneers actually trailed after one quarter of play, 11-7, but used a 21-13 advantage in the second quarter to take the lead for good.
"We struggled a little bit in the first quarter with too many reach-in fouls," said coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer, whose team is now 2-0 on the young season. "We got into big-time foul trouble, and we went really deep into our bench.
"We started knocking down shots and we clamped down on defense. Our fast break offense was key. We did a great job pushing the ball up the court and breaking their press."
Point guard Sarah Schulz led the way for the Bucs with a team-high 11 points. She gave the team a spark in the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers and finished with three triples on the night.
Alex Merz drilled a pair of 3-pointers and added 10 points while Mindy Marx scored nine. Alex Law, Lindsey Burnside and Kaeding Skelton each scored eight for the Bucs, who will face Traverse City West today at 3 p.m.
Skelton, a 6-foot, 1-inch sophomore, pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while Merz and Burnside had four boards and two steals each.
Grand Haven dressed just nine players as Sarah Deal is hurt and did not dress and Paige Wilds, a three-year varsity performer, is out with the swine flu, according to Kowalczyk-Fulmer. She did not make the trip to Traverse City with the team.
Junior Varsity: Abby Cole led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds as Grand Haven trounced Traverse City Central, 45-25. Megan Newhouse added nine points and 10 boards. Morgan Hawver contributed with eight points while Angie Schultz and Jordan Keefe finished with seven and five steals, respectively.
Freshmen: Grace Kendra scored 15 points to lead the Buccaneers over the Trojans, 42-27.
WMC CRUISES TO WIN
Western Michigan Christian raced out to a 13-2 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 52-33 win over host Wyoming Godwin Heights Friday night.
The win brings WMC's record to 1-1 and and is the first win for coach Justin Kreuze as the Warriors' varsity coach.
"That first one is always great," Kreuze said. He praised the performance of his entire squad, but singled out senior Anne VanRees, who had the biggest night of her career with 18 points and 14 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards.
"Anne played a great, great all around game," Kreuze said.
The Warriors led 25-12 at intermission and 40-23 going into the final period.
Joslyn Bluhm added 12 points while LaRissa Byma and Chandler Hoekstra each scored seven. Point guard Rachel Karsten dished out seven assists.
Junior Varsity: The Warriors moved their season mark to 2-0 with a 47-24 win. Rachel Bruinsma led the way with 12 points while Miya Oakes added eight points, six steals and four assists.
