WMC, Fruitport fall in openers

Western Michigan Christian led 13-10 and the end of the first quarter at Muskegon Heights Tuesday night, but the Tigers outscored the Warriors 26-5 in the second quarter en route to a 55-35 win.
Heights took a 36-18 lead into the locker room at intermission and led 50-25 going into the final period.
Returning senior starter Lisa Sorensen led the Warriors with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists while junior Anne VanRees scored eight points and had five rebounds. Carly Nelson also had five rebounds.
The Warriors host Godwin Heights Friday with junior varsity starting at 5:30 followed by varsity at about 7.
JUNIOR VARSITY: The Warriors rolled to a 45-34 win. Lauren Merz of Spring Lake had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds for WMC. LaRissa Byma tossed in 13 points also while Rayonee Grant added eight points and Miya Oakes grabbed nine rebounds, dished out eight assists and added five points. Rachel Karsten also had five assists.
TROJANS DROP OPENER
Ravenna's Emily Gardenour scored 22 points as the Bulldogs knocked off Fruitport in the season-opener for both teams Tuesday, 52-23.
Gardenour knocked down a trio of 3-pointers as she nearly single-handedly outscored the Trojans.
Fruitport was led by Beka German, who scored six points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists. Anna Stone added six points and three steals while Jessica Shelton had five rebounds and two steals.
The Trojans were plagued by miscues as they had 22 turnovers on the night.
JUNIOR VARSITY: Ravenna edged Fruitport, 39-36. Amber Carmean had nine points, four steals and played outstanding defense for the Trojans. Breanna Geile had eight points and seven boards while Brooke Hill finished with seven points.
