Storm damage estimate totals $34.8 million

Fri, Jul 3, 2009    to del.icio.us

Ottawa County damage estimates from the June 19 floods have been revised to $4.3 million in public damage and $30.5 million in private property.

Bill Smith, the county's emergency management director, said the public damage total dropped slightly after a duplicate entry was found; while Holland city officials reported another $5 million in private property damages.

Smith said that the county continues to revise estimates as more reports are received from cities and townships.

But he said people should not get "false hopes as far as FEMA coming," because the county needs to prove at least 25 structures have been damaged 40 percent or more.
